Race Data Definitions

Race data is that data which defines a specific race.  For example, length of the race, type of race (race grade), Pre and Post Race Ratings, and results of the race - including wager payoffs.  Keep in mind that the descriptions given here apply to QuickHorse's Free Data.  For descriptions of Pay Data Race Data consult the Brisnet Library here -

Shown below is a screenshot of the list of Race Data items available while using QuickHorse's Custom Method Builder to build a column.  Other Race Data items are available for export and include wager payoff and results data.  The reason these data items are not available to the user when building a column is that they are not available to a user prior to the race being run - quite obviously.

Below find both the QuickHorse Name of the data in bold type, and its description in normal type face.  Listed first are those same items as are shown in Figure 1 - see above.

RACE_LENGTH - The length of this race (running distance) in yards (not furlongs).

RACE_PRICE - The Claiming Price of the horse at the time of this race.  QuickHorse's free data doesn't include data for this field.  It should not be used to create a column unless you are using Brisnet Pay Data.

RACE_PRE_RACE_RATING - This data is a number between 0 and 100 which represents a Race Rating prior to the running of the race.  This value is calculated by averaging the most recently available BrisClassRating - see OUTING_BRISCLASSRATING - for each horse in today's race.  This average is then checked against the Base Grade Rating value. This Base Grade Rating is ZERO for M, C, CO or S Grade Races (see RACE_GRADE below), 50 for all N, T, TR or A Grade Races and 80 for all G1, G2 or G3 Grade Races.  The Race Rating computed must be within the appropriate base grade rating range and if not, it is set to either the upper or lower range of values corresponding to the Grade.

For example, the average value of the last BrisClassRating for all horses is 75, and today's race is an allowance race.  The Pre Race Rating is 75 because 75 is an acceptable value.  On the other hand, if today's race was graded as G3, the Pre Race Rating would be set upward to 80.  And if the grade of the race was CO, the value would be set to 49.  The bottom line is there are two pieces of information which affect the Race Rating.  The track applied grade of the race which can limit the value of the Race Rating, and the mathematical calculation of BrisClassRating.

RACE_POST_RACE_RATING - This data is a number between 0 and 100 which represents a Race Rating assigned to a race AFTER the running of the race.  This value is calculated first by establishing a BASE GRADE RATING for the race.  This Base Grade Rating is ZERO for M, C, CO or S Grade Races (see RACE_GRADE below), 50 for all N, T, TR or A Grade Races and 80 for all G1, G2 or G3 Grade Races.  After that, an OFFSET VALUE within that Base Grade is calculated.  To calculate this offset value, each horse's Bris Class Rating (See OUTING_BRISCLASSRATING - is calculated for this race.  An average of those values is computed, and this average value is initially considered the Post Race Rating for this race.  However, if this value falls outside the Base Grade Rating thresholds, ie from 0-49 for Claiming, 50-79 for Allowance type, and 80-100 for Graded Stakes, then its final value is limited by those thresholds.

RACE_PURSE - Simply the value of the entire purse for today's race.

RACE_TRACKRECORD - The track record at this distance and surface at this track.  QuickHorse free data doesn't list these times.  These times, therefore, are only available with Bris Pay Data.

The following definitions are for other data items related to the race, but these are not included as accessible to the Custom Method Programmer (so there are not listed with the RACE_ prefix).  Rather they are used by QuickHorse to deliver content to the user in so far as they are used in Backtesting and Supertuning.

RACEID - A string of characters which consists of 3 characters for Track Id (3rd character may be blank if the track id is composed of 2 characters, along with 8 digits of the following composition YYYYMMDD where YYYY is the year in which the race took place, MM is the month the race took place, and DD is the day the race took place.  These 8 characters are then followed by a hyphen character, which is then followed by 2 digits which give the Race Number.  If the Race Number is a single digit, a ZERO (0) is placed before that number giving 2 digits for Race Number in all cases.  Since this item is a string of characters it isn't really used by Column Building because it is not arithmetic. This data is used by QuickHorse to index races within the QuickHorse database so these races can be accessed when requested by the user.

Example:  CD 20100127-01 meaning Churchill Downs Race 1 on January 27th, 2010.

GRADE - a one or two character description of the race type or grade.  This value may be any of the following: 

"M" - Maiden, "C" - Claiming, "CO" - Optional Claiming, S - Maiden Special Weights, "N" - non-graded stake/handicap, "T" - Starter Handicap, "TR" - Trial, "A" - Allowance,"R" - Starter Allowance, "G1" - Grade 1 Stakes/Handicap, "G2" - Grade 2 Stakes/Handicap, "G3" - Grade 3 Stakes/Handicap

This grade information is displayed on the QuickHorse Outings Displays - See Figure 2 of the Standard Method beneath the column labeled "GRD".  As was the case with RACE_ID, this field is character in nature, and can not be used to calculate a Column value using the Column Builder.

RESULTS - A table of values in an order that matches the listing of horse's names in the race program which give the finish position for each respective horse.  For example, a horse whose name is "Whistlers Mother" is the first horse listed in today's program and this horse finished 5th.  This means the first value in the results table would be the finish position of this horse which would be a 5 for 5th place.

CONDITION - Track Condition as listed in the results chart for the race.  These are two letter designations and can be any of the following:

FT - Fast, WF - Wet Fast, GD - Good, SY - Sloppy, MY - Muddy, FM - Firm (Turf), YG - Yielding (Turf), ST - Soft (Turf)
Those designators listed with (Turf) are only used when a race is run on the Turf.  All others are used only when referring to a race run on a dirt track.

RESTIME - Resulting Time of Race - this is the final time of the winner of the race.

SURFACE -  BrisnetRacing Surface Code (D, d, T, t, etc)
